Base layer, mid layer and outer layer: each layer fulfils a particular purpose. It will keep you dry, warm or cool. When cleverly combined, you are well prepared – whatever the weather has in store. We are going to explain the separate layers in more detail and will show you how you can best put together a perfect outfit.

Base layer

This layer is worn directly against the skin and is the most important element in the entire layering system. The base layer wicks away the body’s sweat and provides warmth.

The choice of material is extremely important in this respect:

  • Synthetics are lightweight and dry quickly – the perfect properties for warmer weather and sports.
  • Natural materials such as wool keep the body warm even when wet and have natural odour-inhibiting properties. Woollen products are ideal when it is really cold outside.

Can’t decide? A mix of natural and synthetic fibres gives you the best of both worlds.

The mid layer is worn as a second layer. It keeps the body warm and is extremely breathable, guaranteeing optimum temperature regulation.

In icy conditions it is best to go for insulated jackets and gilets; by contrast fleeces are best worn during the in-between seasons.

For active trips, we would recommend styles that are lightweight and pack away small, so you can adapt quickly and easily to the changing weather conditions. Too warm? Simply fold up the insulated jacket and stow it in your backpack.

This is also known as the top layer and will protect you against the elements. Specific styles also have extra zips for added ventilation. The outer layer can be either a hardshell, insulated jacket or a softshell.

What jacket is best for your needs?

  • If it rains, the jacket should ideally be waterproof.
  • If it’s sunny yet cold, an insulated jacket is the best choice for staying warm.
  • A perfect combination is undoubtedly the 3-in-1 jacket: This comprises an inner and outer jacket that can be worn either separately or together.
  • The softshell is a good choice for the in-between season, as it will protect you against the wind and is also water-repellent.
